The Los Angeles Lakers are always major players in free agency, but reports say that Mitch Kupchak and company could be ready for a return to relevance really quickly.
It’s been known for months that Rajon Rondo is likely to sign with L.A. this summer. He loves Kobe and the Lakers would be his show.
He could have some talented company according to Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders:
So real money, let’s peg the Lakers at $22.1 million to play with, that’s enough for one serious max contract to an established veteran like Monroe, Rondo or Love – and all three are said to be willing to meet with the Lakers this summer.
Rondo and Monroe will become unrestricted free agents this July, but Love will have a player option with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
There are doubts about Love’s loyalty to the Cavs now, but that’s still a wait and see approach for everyone involved.
Monroe could choose to stay with the Detroit Pistons long-term. Stan Van Gundy has made him an important piece and he vibes with Reggie Jackson as well.
I say it’s Rondo or bust for L.A.
