I can admit that I’ve gambled on sports during my time, but last nights Duke-Utah ending is the reason I don’t bet often or big.
Sports gambling beats playing the slots in a casino, but it’s still not a perfect science. Take this late foul call from Friday night.
Jump ball? Nahhhhh, but yeah let me call a foul with .7 seconds left. Utah +5/5.5 pic.twitter.com/ozj3IzDImy

Utah trailed Duke for much of the second half of their Sweet 16 matchup, but hit a few buckets at the end to get the game within five points. After a Utah miss with seven seconds left in the game, Duke’s Quinn Cook grabbed the rebound and held on to the ball, waiting for the clock to run out.
After what appeared to be a clear jump ball, Cook wrenched the ball away and started running up the court. He was then touched by a Utah player, which caused a suspect ref to call foul as the buzzer sounded. At that point, Utah should have lost by five, allowing them to cover the spread or at least get you a push.
The refs put 0.7 seconds back on the board, got Utah back out on the floor, and had Cook take his free throw. He missed the first, then hit the second, giving Duke a 6-point win — and causing heartache all over the country for gamblers.
$10 gazillion trillion changed hands on that free throw …
