No one seems to know just what the hell is going on with the New York Knicks, including team owner James Dolan.
Sure, Dolan is probably in the building watching the Knicks go through the motions trying to get through their worst season in franchise history, but he remains unbothered. That’s because he believes 69-year-old ex-coach turned guru, Phil Jackson will magically fix it all.
In a recent interview with Marc Berman of the New York Post, Dolan made it clear he has no plans to intervene in the Knicks future dealings and is perfectly comfortable allowing Jackson to man the captain chair by his lonesome.
“I don’t see [intervening] happening,” Dolan said in a recent interview, according to Marc Berman of the New York Post. “Phil is a brilliant basketball guy, and he and (general manager) Steve (Mills) are working together great. I enjoy being out of the limelight. I enjoy having two experts in there that I trust. I barely have to do a thing. It can stay like that for me forever. As long as we continue to make progress – and I’m sure we will. I believe!”
Dolan went on to ask the fans (who pay some of the highest ticket prices in the NBA) to continue to be patient for just a little while longer:
“The majority of them understand we’re in a rebuild,” he said, “We’re moving as fast as we can and they see our opportunities as being huge. I think they are, but it’s all in Phil’s hands.”
“All in Phil’s hands”…that sounds like Dolan gearing up his “don’t look at me, look at him” statements. Don’t get me wrong, Phil Jackson is one of the best coaches in NBA history, but he had players to work with. Can you name three current New York Knicks? Can he?
I’m not saying the Knicks are destined for the dumps just yet, but if James Dolan’s only plan is to sit back and allow Phil Jackson to do it all himself, I wouldn’t be looking for the Knickerbockers to be relevant anytime soon.
