We know that racism exists in sports, but unless you have some concrete evidence like a wide receiver saying he will beat up all the niggers at a concert, it is hard to prove.
Nothing in Chip Kelly’s background suggests he is a racist, what his background does suggest is he feels his system doesn’t need superstar or expensive players. I don’t think that has anything to do with race, but ego.
There is another more subtle point I want to make, but first here are the raw numbers of the Eagles offseason moves courtesy of Philly Voice.
Black players added: 8
Black players lost: 7
White players added: 3
White players lost: 4
Five of the six players drafted by Eagles were black.
Here is the subtle part, it is possible that Kelly dislikes a certain personality type. Now, if those personality traits are more associated with blacks than whites, does that make him racist? Unlikely, because I think most coaches like their players to be a certain way regardless of their color of their skin. The difference with Kelly is he has FULL CONTROL of the roster, so he can shape the roster as he sees fit. Kelly got rid of his White Quarterback for a Native American one and wanted to draft one from Hawaii.
So, final verdict in my opinion is that Kelly didn’t get rid of the players because they were black, but more so because they didn’t fit whatever his vision of what an ideal player in his system should be.
Only time will tell if he was right or wrong about that.
