Bennett elaborated on the book’s title and said it focuses on the issues in America that need to be addressed, per The News Tribune.
“I think the title is a just a title to start a conversation so people want to read,” said Bennett. I think the book I’m focusing on is issues that I see that are important in America, and that are my view.”
Bennett will also dive into race relations in America. During the 2017 NFL season, he joined in on Colin Kaepernick’s stance by kneeling during the national anthem to protest against racism, police brutality, and racial inequality.
Haymarket Books commended Bennett’s efforts to address these injustices in America and said that every athlete has a responsibility to take a stance to fight against these issues that are plaguing this country. They went on to say that Bennett’s social justice efforts resemble that of Colin Kaepernick and Muhammad Ali.
“Bennett adds his unmistakable voice to discussions of racism and police violence, Black athletes and their relationship to powerful institutions like the NCAA and the NFL, the role of protest in history, and the responsibilities of athletes as role models to speak out against injustice,” Haymarket Books says. “Following in the footsteps of activist-athletes from Muhammad Ali to Colin Kaepernick, Bennett demonstrates his outspoken leadership both on and off the field.”
Yes, Bennett will ruffle a lot of white supremacists’ feathers with the title of this book, its message, along with its content but these are problems that need to be addressed in our country. Black people and other minorities do not receive equal treatment and Bennett is using a large platform to put these issues on the forefront of America’s problems. Many white people in America are sadly uncomfortable with discussing these issues because it doesn’t affect them so this book will aim to have a discussion that is desperately needed.
