I am not going to lie I am still salty about there not being a Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight in March. I thought the whole thing was trivial and did horrible damage to the sport of boxing.
How many people have talked about boxing since the fight fell through? No one cares anymore except hard core boxing fans and even they are still upset.
While fights like Pacquiao vs. Clottey and Mayweather vs. Mosley are interesting the buzz just isn’t there.
The reason the Mayweather/Pacquiao fight blew up was over drug testing. Floyd wanted Olympic style random blood drug testing and Manny wanted the tests not to be random and have a set day to them.
One of the excuses the Pacquiao camp came up with was that Manny is scared of needles and didn’t want to take any blood tests 30 days before the fight because he says that weakens him.
Here is Manny though taking blood 20 days before the Clottey fight as part of a pre fight exam.
When the Pacquiao and Mayweather camps were in mediation the Mayweather camp offered a compromise of random blood tests up to 15 days before the fight (the middle ground between anytime and 30 days). That compromise was shot down by the Pacquiao camp.
In the end we lost the biggest fight in boxing history over 5 days.
I repeat we lost the biggest fight in boxing history over 5 measly days.
No wonder everyone thinks boxing is dead.
