Mercury Morris is back in the news. His claim to fame is being a RB for the NFL’s only undefeated team, the 72′ Dolphins and subsequently popping bottles every time the last undefeated team loses every year. Now the man is trying to get his money:
“Former Miami Dolphins star Mercury Morris is suing the NFL Retirement Board, alleging he’s being underpaid $3,000 a month in benefits.
The lawsuit, filed Thursday in Miami’s federal court, claims Morris is receiving $3,100 a month when he should be getting twice that amount. He’s also seeking $91,000 in back pay.
Morris won a settlement with the board in 1991 for $250,000 in disability claims.”
The NFL retirement board cheated him out of his money before, could they be doing it again? I really hope not. Of course, its not fair to jump to conclusion on either party. Litigation will most certainly decide who is in the wrong in the future.
Now for a few things on Mr.Morris. He has one of the the best names in sports in my opinion. It just sounds good. Wonder if a certain sports personality with an affinity to circling wagons has a nickname for him? Secondly, its safe to say that there will never be another perfect team. We will be hearing from Mr.Morris yearly. When Dolphins went undefeated they had a 17-0 record, today’s teams have to have a record of 19-0. It would have happened a few years back had it not been for a miracle allowed by angry Football Gods. It seems even less likely that it will happen in near future. NFL is planning to expand regular season to 18 games. A team would essentially have to go 21-0 to achieve perfection assuming playoff format remains the same. With the extra length of seasons, teams might have more incentive to tank games by resting starters, especially if they are 16-0 and locked up homefield advantage. Why risk injury for perfection?( Colts ask themselves this question every year it seems) Of course, that is a topic for another day. Last but not least, you Mr.Morris, are a great soundbyte. A quick youtube search yields plenty of nuggets. I’ll leave you with this nugget from Mercury, enjoy.
