In his most serious offense a DUI crash that killed a person he has been acquitted, here are the details:
A jury in Florida has acquitted former major league baseball player Jim Leyritz of DUI manslaughter in a 2007 crash that killed a mother of two.
However, jurors on Saturday did convict Leyritz of driving under the influence, a misdemeanor. Leyritz had faced up to 15 years in prison if convicted. The misdemeanor conviction carries a maximum six-month sentence.
Testimony was inconclusive on whether Leyritz ran a red light on Dec. 28, 2007, when he collided with a vehicle driven by 30-year-old Fredia Ann Veitch, who died.
These cases are very hard to prove, especially when it is obvious the person did not intentionally cause the accident.
I think jurors have a hard time putting people in jail for 15 years unless it is blatant and clear that the driver had no regard for human life.
If there is any doubt, I can see why they would acquit.
Very sad story and hopefully Leyritz never puts himself in this position again by drinking and driving.
