Former Buccaneers Lee Roy Selmon Suffers Stroke

A lot of people remember that the Bucs were bad for a really long time before Tony Dungy showed up. What they don’t remember, for a brief time in the late 70’s and early 80’s, they were a decent team that made the NFC Championship game once.

By far the best player on those teams was Lee Roy Selmon, he was the the first pick of the franchise.  Sad news that he passed away today.

“It is with the deepest and most profound sorrow that we learned our dear friend Lee Roy Selmon’s passing this afternoon,” said a statement from his restaurant that was sent to the Fox affiliate in Tampa. “Lee Roy Selmon was a man of honor, integrity, strength and family values. He was our dear friend and business partner for many years.”

Selmon was rushed to the hospital after suffering a stroke today.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Selmon.

*UPDATE*

Selmon’s brother is denying the press release that went out about his brother’s death.

Dewey Selmon told Ch. 10 his brother is “showing signs of progress” after suffering a stroke at his home in Tampa.
