It’s obvious that once your team has made the playoffs, many people associated with the city will benefit financially. Usually the team makes more money from merchandise and memorabilia, and the city benefits from the added revenue generated from ticket sales. Also, if a certain song is associated with a team’s success that artist would be in line for financial benefits (which is also the reason why I think Wiz Khalifa was the biggest loser when the Packers beat the Steelers in the Super Bowl).
Due to the success of the Cardinals, the city of St. Louis has not only benefited but they’ve been relieved financially.
SI.com has the details:
The additional revenue for the city generated by the postseason run has prompted Mayor Francis Slay to cancel furloughs. He told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the good fortune was attributable “to the incredible run to the World Series.”
Slay said the postseason baseball has generated a little more than $2 million in extra funds for the city. The furloughs were expected to save the city $2.8 million, but if the World Series makes it to seven games, the city would stand to make another $900,000 or so in additional revenue.
I think this story is just incredible. In late August, the Cardinals were 10 1/2 games back of the Braves in the Wild Card race and were already worrying about the 2012 season and the future of manager Tony La Russa.
Fast forward two months later and the Cards are in the World Series with a chance to bring St. Louis another championship along with the financial relief they’ve already given.
Funny how things work.
