BSO Interview: NASCAR Driver Marcos Ambrose Talks Richard Petty & Daytona 500

I like race car driving.

NASCAR and Indy Car.  I use to stay up late to watch the tape delay of the Indy 500 when Rick Mears was winning titles.   I remember reading about the King Richard Petty.

Speaking of Richard Petty one of his up and coming drivers on Richard Petty Motorsports is Maros Ambrose. We had a chance to speak with Marcos about his career and the upcoming Daytona 500 Feb. 26 at 1 p.m. ET on Fox.

You can keep up with all the Daytona 500 news on Twitter by using the #Daytona500 hashtag

Marcos you are from Australia, what is the driving circuit like there?

It is different from the states.  It is a smaller country and more road courses.  You know if you have aspirations of being a big time driver you have to come to America.

Many American racers are born into racing families and are fast tracked to NASCAR, how was it for you having to go a longer route to achieve your dream of racing in NASCAR?

It was harder than I thought.  Watching on TV it looks easy, but making my way from Australia to NASCAR was quite a journey.  Many American NASCAR drivers start out just making left turns, like you said they are born into it.  I have raced on all different types of tracks, so it took some getting use to. Plus the level of competition is so high, you have to be on your game at all times.

You are with Richard Petty Motorsports how have they help you become a better driver ?

When the King tells you something you listen.  He has given me a ton of tips and I just try to implement them the best I can.  They are the best in the world at what they do.

You have been on the cusp of the Top 10 in the Sprint Cup Series, what do you think you have to do to make it into the Chase and possibly win it all?

I have to take more chances.  Such a small margin for error, but you have to take risks and I am ready to do that.

How are you feeling about your chances at Daytona and give us an idea what it is like to drive in that race?

It is a little unusual to have your biggest race of the year as the first race, but it makes NASCAR unique.  I have three cars that we are currently testing, I am sure I will crash one or two trying to find the perfect one.  It is every racers’ dream to win the Daytona 500 and I think I have a good chance this year.
