Ozzie Newsome Says Trading Anquan Boldin Helped Rebuild Defense

Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome may be the best executive in the NFL, hands down.

Newsome watched most of his defense either retire, or leave for greener pastures this off-season, and many wonder aloud, what the Ravens were going to do to fix the holes.

Newsome decided he couldn’t pay Anquan Boldin, who was the backbone of the teams offense.  The gutsy GM bit the bullet, traded Boldin to San Francisco for a late round pick and some cap room.

He then turned that extra cap space into the signings of Elvis Dumervill, and Michael Huff.

Dumervill and Huff will replace Paul Kruger and Ed Reed, and allow the Ravens to possibly be better on defense in 2013.  Newsome told Peter King of the TheMMQB.com that he had no regrets over trading his veteran wide receiver,  saying “the money saved helped rebuild their defense.”

“The acquisitions of Elvis Dumervil and Michael Huffare a direct result of the money we saved from that contract,” Newsome said. “And other guys we got—Chris CantyMarcus SpearsDaryl Smith—were helped by the savings. So if you ask the question, you can’t just say, ‘Do you wish you kept him?’ You also have to look at the unintended consequences of your actions.”
