Kelvin Sampson is heading back to college basketball.
Pat Forde is reporting that the University of Houston and Rockets assistant coach Kelvin Sampson are progressing in talks to make him the Cougars next head coach.
Sampson met with university officials this week and the two sides are nearing a deal.
There’s optimism that an agreement could be reached in the next several days, but there are still hurdles to overcome in completing a deal, sources said.
Despite the momentum on Sampson’s candidacy, Houston may still interview one more coach before a deal with Sampson is consummated, sources told Yahoo Sports.
In 2008, Sampson received a five-year show-cause penalty for recruiting violations involving impermissible phone calls while at Oklahoma and Indiana.
