LeBron James will not go the Michael Jordan route. MJ once famously said “Republicans buy shoes, too.” when asked why he wouldn’t endorse a candidate who was looking to be the first black member of the Senate since Reconstruction. That ushered in a new era of brand first athletes that we hadn’t really seen before.
Now we have Lebron James from and center in an ad for the Affordable Care Act. here is James’ quote about it:
“I mean, I can’t worry about that,” James said. “Especially who I am. I mean, I know that everything that I do is going to be bigger than what it should be or blown out of proportion. But what I believe in and the people that I support is what it’s all about. So I can sleep comfortably at night.”
I applaud LeBron for publicly taking a stance one way or the other. It’s refreshing to see in a era where sports stars want to appear neutral about many topics to sell the most gear they can.
