The score was 16-4 and social media was abuzz that UCONN was going to be blown out by Florida. ESPN even sent out an update asking if the game was over.
From that point UCONN outscored Florida 59-37. They simply overpowered Florida with their swarming defense.
Billy Donovan said in the post game press conference that his guards specifically Scottie Wilbekin couldn’t get in the lane or take advantage of the pick and roll because of UCONN’s defense. The Gators shooting tells the story (19-49 from the field, 1-10 from 3). It was partly just a bad shooting night, but most of the credit goes to UCONN.
The Gators finished with 3 assists which were the lowest amount in a National Semifinal game since they started counting the stat 30 years ago.
If you truly believe “Defense Wins Championships”, you have to like UCONN chances in the championship game.
