With all of the tight games we saw in during the College World Series, it was only fitting that we had another nail bitter.
After Vanderbilt took the first game in a 9-8 slugfest and Virginia took game two by the score of 7-2, the stage was set for the finale for the College Baseball season. Before a crowd of 18,344 the Cavaliers and Commadores played a tight game from start to finish. Vandy got on the board first after a throwing error on an attempted steal allowed the to cross the plate. That type of aggressive base running is what allowed them to tie the all time record for stolen bases in the CWS with 17.
1-0 Vandy is how the score stayed until the 6th inning when Vandy tacked on another run to take the 2-0 lead. Then Virginia was finally able to put something together against the ‘Dores starter Carson Fulmer was seemingly in cruise control until a couple of hits and an error led to a couple runs for Virginia to tie this thing up at 2.
The game was still tied up until the bottom of the 8th when hero John Norwood hit a Home Run over the left field fence. It was the first game winning Home Run in the CWS since 2010. Vandy was having a watch party at their football field and this is what the scene looked like when that happened:
Dansby Swanson, who was named Most Outstanding Player. He had 10 hits which tied him for the most in the CWS this year. This National Championship gave Vanderbilt its first men’s title in school history.
