Early Monday morning, US track athlete and former UGA track star, Torrin Lawrence, was killed in a traffic accident. Torrin’s vehicle had a tire blowout that cause him to be disabled in the middle of I-75 near Cordele, GA. According to reports, Lawrence called 9-1-1, but before police arrived on the scene, a semi-truck crashed into his car.
Lawrence was part of the US team that won the gold medal in the 4x400m at the IAAF World Relays in Nassau in May. He was also a three-time SEC champion and won the 400m championship in 2010. The CEO of USA Track & Field, Max Siegel, issued a statement.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and everyone who knew him. Torrin represented USATF with pride and passion, and had an incredible future ahead of him. We join those who will miss him deeply.”
