Could we see Roger Goodell come to life on the big screen by Luke Wilson? Rumors have swirled for months about a movie about NFL concussions, which will star Will Smith. But could the Roger Goodell role already be selected, as well?
According to Jeff Sneider from The Wrap sources close to the film say that Wilson is currently in negotiations to play the NFL commish in the film. While the project remains without a title, Sneider also noted that the film will be directed by Ridley Scott and will boast a cast feauting Alec Baldwin, Albert Brooks and other stars.
Here is the depth of what we now know about Goodell’s role in the film:
Goodell plays a background role in the original story, although it will be interesting to see if his role would become more prominent in the film if they end up taking the script beyond 2009. Given the GQ piece’s indictment of the league’s response to Omalu’s findings, the character will likely be focused on portraying Goodell as an aloof corporate executive not wanting to hear the truth about the potential hazards of his business.
Not quite sure about the potential casting–looks aside, this sounds like a pretty serious role. Wilson has a long history of doing comedic roles, so this is a big switch.
