When LeBron, Wade & Bosh all took shorter deals after the rookie contracts, Melo signed the longer extension. Because of that he had to force a trade to Knicks as opposed to be signed outright (they signed Amare instead after missing out on Bron).
LeBron took a short deal with Cavs because he knew the new TV deal was coming and he could cash out on a bigger max contract in two years.
You would think that is something Melo would have considered right?
“I never thought about it,” Anthony said after practice on Monday. “I didn’t want to go back and do what I did this summer [as a free agent]. There was stuff on the table [but there] wasn’t a two-year deal discussed.
“I’m good, man,’’ Anthony said. “Five years. I’m good. I don’t want to speak on a two-year deal right now. I don’t even know why I’m sitting here talking about a two-year deal. I’m good. The organization is good. Everybody is in a good place.”
The good news for Melo is he will have to suffer this year, but the follow years, the Knicks will be out of salary cap hell with a lot of money to spend. Hopefully, Phil Jackson can put a championship around him.
