Oscar De La Hoya must really believe Canelo is the star of the future because he’s honestly thinking about putting him up head-to-head against Mayweather in Vegas on May 2nd.
In an interview with BoxingScene.com De La Hoya told them that the plan was for Canelo-Kirkland to fight at the Thomas & Mack while Floyd Mayweather fights Cotto at the MGM (anticipating that Floyd bails on Manny).
Here’s an excerpt from the De La Hoya interview:
A lot of fight fans come to Vegas just for the atmosphere around Mayweather fights so giving them another fight to attend isn’t a horrible idea. To think that Canelo can steal some fans away from Mayweather is ridiculous tho.
At most this is an attempt to piggy back off of Mayweather and lay stake to the Mexican holidays Canelo covets once Mayweather retires.
