Draymond Green will be the most sought after free agent this summer, that is, if he doesn’t immediately resign in Golden State. The fresh-faced 25 year old (March 5th was his birthday, happy belated) has shot over 40% from the field in his career, and has increased his rebound total in each of his first three seasons.
Organizations with huge cap space this summer are already having visions of the athletic SF joining their squad, and you can now count Green’s hometown team among them. When asked if he’d ultimately like a return to where he grew up and played in college, his response was simple.
“Home is always home. It will always be home. But honestly I don’t really even think about it because trying to win a championship is enough to think about on a daily basis,” Green told the Detroit Free Press. “So I don’t have time to sit and think, ‘Man, it would be great for me to go back home and play in Detroit, play in my home state.’ I don’t have time for that because I got one goal and that’s to try to win a championship with the team that I’m on.”
It’s important to note that the Warriors are both likely to to offer their rising star over 10 million a year, and are able to match any offer sheet from other teams through out the league (since Green is only a restricted free agent). So while teams with huge amounts of available money can dream about this offseason’s potential, it’s more than likely that Golden State will ante up the money for the Michigan man. ESPN concluded,
The Warriors are set to go way over the luxury tax line due to the extension signed by Klay Thompson in October and Green’s upcoming deal. So far, the owners have maintained they are willing to pay the tax to keep the team intact.
We know certain people value playing in their home state more than others, however, time will only tell what Green values most at this point of his life. In the mean time, like they always say, dream big kids.
