Man Arrested 492 Times For The Same Crime

Robert Brown

Yes, you did read that correctly.

Via WKRN:

A man was arrested Tuesday after police discovered him on the side of an Interstate 65 entrance ramp drinking a 40-ounce beer.
According to an affidavit, Robert Brown, 46, has been charged on 492 offenses in Davidson County, most of which are for public intoxication, dating back to 1994.
Police reported Brown sits in the same spot off I-65 and becomes intoxicated until officers come and arrest him.

Brown was reportedly taken into custody Tuesday because he was too intoxicated to care for his own wellbeing.

He was charged with public intoxication but according to Metro jail officials, Brown is supposed to be released from jail late Wednesday. The charge was dismissed.

Each time Brown is arrested, he spends a night or two behind bars and is released again.

Many want to know, how does that keep happening?

News 2 went to Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall to get answers.

“You can’t lock a person up for public intoxication for five years. The law won’t allow you to do that,” said Sheriff Hall.

While it’s unusual for an offender to have nearly 500 charges, Sheriff Hall said it’s not uncommon for people with an addiction or mental illness to return to the system over and over again.

You would think that after the, let’s say 100th time, officers would actually see that jail isn’t helping Brown fight his alcohol addiction.  They should help him seek help instead of locking him up for a day or two only to have him be released and go get drunk again.
