We know Damian Lillard can rap. He’s got more talent than some cats in the game right now, and he can ball with the best point guards in the NBA.
What we don’t know is whether Lillard (aka Dame DOLLA) can keep it up for an entire album.
“I plan on putting out a short album,” he said. “I want to do it way before the season is even creeping up on us; I want to get something done early. But it’s already done. If I do put something out, it’s not something that I need to do now, it’s already done. I recorded a lot stuff. But the crazy thing is, I don’t spend a lot of time doing it. I have things that I do. I work out twice a day, I get my lift in, I hang out with my family and I’ve just been relaxing a lot. But some nights, I decide to go the studio and do some music just to give myself some balance, to put my mind in a different place and kind of put my emotions out there a little bit. I don’t spend a lot of time doing it, so it’s been kind of funny to see people like, ‘Oh he better get in the gym!’”
An album from Lillard would be of interest to a lot of folks. “Solder in the Game” has nearly 750,000 listens on Soundcloud and another song, “Full Stomach,” has over 250,000.
Dame’s name has been hot in the rap game since he dropped that freestyle on Sway in the Morning that caught everyone’s attention. While he makes it clear in the first sentence it’s planned to be a “short” album, but even 7 or 8 solid tracks from an NBA player would be impressive.
Many have tried and failed miserably in the past. Kobe, Shaq, AI, Jason Kidd, Metta Worldpeace.. even Lance Stephenson recently attempted the feat (but doesn’t deserve the link).
It’s not as easy as it looks, and just because you may be constantly around the culture does NOT mean you can spit bars like those boys.
Dame DOLLA may be the exception but that remains to be seen.
