2015 Mike Leach is doing his best 2013 Mike Leach impersonation. Just two years ago the 54-year-old Leach led Wazzu to the most wins they’d seen in 8 years, in only his second season as Head Coach. Late in the season athletic director Bill Moos gave Leach a contract extension through 2018.
Fast forward to 2015, Leach led the Cougars to a 9-4 record, including a 20-14 victory over Miami in the Sun Bowl. The win over The U was Washington State’s first bowl victory since 50 dropped ‘In Da Club’ in 2003.
“Mike Leach and his entire staff have done a tremendous job in building our football program, and the goal is to keep moving forward,” Moos said in a statement on the team’s official website.
Moos realizes Leach and company have definitely put together some keys for success, leading the athletic director to channel his inner Dj Khaled and give the Pac-12 Co-Coach of the Year a second contract extension. Yes. Another one.
The Cougs, as their called in Pullman, ranked second in the nation in passing, after finishing first last season, and currently lead all FBS schools in red zone offense.
“I believe I speak for all Cougar fans when I say we want Mike Leach leading our football program for many years to come,” continued Moos.
After having one of the most prolific offenses in the nation, Leach left Texas Tech in 2009 amid controversy with players. Adam James in particular, who claimed Leach mistreated him after he had a concussion. James’ claims would later be called into question. Nonetheless, Leach rode the bench two full seasons before landing at Washington State.
Now, Leach and the Cougars look to build on their 2015 campaign and become a contender, not only in the Pac-12, but nationally as well.
