Just the fact that the Bucs fired Lovie Smith is appalling. Now the fact that they did it over the phone is even worse. Things aren’t looking good for Bucs Ownership as reports surface on why the move was made the way it was. ProFootballTalk had the quote:
“The reason the Bucs fired Smith over the phone may be that they were trying to act quickly in an effort to keep offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter. The Bucs reportedly want to retain Koetter and are now planning to promote him to head coach, and they were concerned the franchise could lose him entirely when the Dolphins reached out to ask for permission to interview Koetter for the head-coaching vacancy in Miami.”
The best part about this is after acting erratically the Bucs may end up empty handed. Koetter has significant ties with the Dolphins as Mike Tannenbaum used to be Koetter’s agent.
I’m usually not cynical, but I’m not rooting for the Bucs in this situation. I wish the fans and players best, but a healthy dose of losing everything will teach the Bucs ownership the correct way to conduct business.
