Some parents at Chatham-Glenwood high school in Illionis are not happy with their children singing the Oscar and Grammy winning song “Glory”. The song performed by Common and John Legend was inspired by and written for the film ‘Selma’. The movie illustrated the events surrounding civil rights movement. The gospel song mirrors those sentiments and calls for justice and equality.
Nevertheless, some simple-minded people are not seeing the lyrics that way. Just like Beyonce’s Super Bowl performance, some people think a call against police brutality and injustice means “anti-police”. This is just not true. Apparently the specific line that has people up in arms is “That’s why we walk through Ferguson with our hands up.” Parents sent emails stating the line is disrespectful to law enforcement according to The Guardian.
The choir director eventually agreed to remove the line from the song. It is sad that the beautiful song’s message got reduced to the negative interpretation of one line…
