Maria Sharapova said that she was unaware that the World Anti-Doping Agency banned meldonium this year and had been taking the drug for 10 years. Initially this seemed like a fair and reasonable excuse. On one hand her ignorance doesn’t mean she shouldn’t be punished but at least we wouldn’t think of Maria as a cheater. However the meldonium manufacturer has come out to say that 10 years is way to long to be taking that drug. According to the manufacturer the normal timeline for treatment is 4-6 weeks.
Basically everything Maria said in her press conference was a lie. Again the cover-up becomes a bigger story than the failed test. Maria has a lot of explaining to do, in light of this latest information.
