It was only a matter of time before Sacramento would decide to part-ways with George Karl. Things could just never fully come together on and off the court.
In more surprising news, after being hired as the UNLV head coach three weeks ago, Chris Beard has changed his mind and will be taking his expertise to Texas Tech.
Athletic director Tina Kunzel-Murphy had this to say:
“Coach Beard has informed me he intends to pursue the men’s basketball head coaching job at Texas Tech. This unprecedented move is extremely disappointing to the President and I, for our program and to our fans.
“Our search process allowed us to develop a deep pool of qualified candidates, from which we will select a great coach who really wants to be here and who will honor his commitments in leading the Runnin’ Rebels.”
As UNLV scrambles to find another solution, George Karl has reportedly thrown his name into the ring.
A person with knowledge of the situation, speaking on the condition of anonymity due to the private nature of the coaching search, said Karl has already had initial dialogue with school officials about the job.
Kunzel-Murphy shouldn’t even go through the interview process because Karl is exactly what UNLV needs.
He provides NBA pedigree, respect, knowledge, teaching and great mannerism. If UNLV reels Karl in, it’ll instantly help recruiting, which hasn’t been a problem for the Runnin’ Rebels.
So, by adding Karl, recruiting should go from good to great.
Get it done.
