Ex-Wife of Orlando Shooter Speaks on Him Being Mentally Unstable

Omar Mateen PulseThe ex-wife of Omar Mateen, the man suspected of killing 50 and wounding 53 others in the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, has spoken out.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, she described Mateen as mentally unstable and revealed that he had beat her repeatedly during their marriage.

After meeting Mateen online 8 years ago, she had decided to move to Florida with him and marry him.  His family is originally from Afghanistan, but her ex-husband was born in New York.  The two married in March 2009 and moved into a 2-bedroom condominium in Fort Pierce, Fla. owned by Mateen’s family.

“He beat me. He would just come home and start beating me up because the laundry wasn’t finished or something like that.”

The marriage only lasted a few months as her father intervened after learning of the abuse.  Her parents flew to Ft. Pierce and removed her from the home’ leaving behind all her possessions.  She has had no contact with Mateen since.

During the brief marriage, she stated that her ex-husband seemed normal and showed no signs of being swayed or motivated by radical Islam.  He was the owner of a small-caliber handgun and ironically worked at a nearby facility for juvenile delinquents as a guard.

Although the FBI has not identified Mateen publicly, his identification was found on the suspected killer’s person.  He is suspected of walking into Pulse nightclub in Orlando and opening fire, killing 50 club-goers and injuring another 53.  He was shot and killed during a shootout with law enforcement.

The attack is the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
