Austin Wilkerson will not receive prison time despite being convicted of sexual assault of a helpless victim and unlawful sexual contact.
The 22-year old University of Colorado-Boulder student raped a fellow student as she drifted out of consciousness after drinking too much at a party. Wilkerson faced a possible sentence of four years to life for his attack on the freshman back in 2014.
However, Judge Patrick Butler gave Wilkerson a light slap on the wrist by sentencing him to two years on work release and 20 years’ probation. He will not have to serve one day in a correctional facility for his crime.
Not sure what is up with these lenient sentences in rape cases. Earlier this year, Stanford swimmer Brock Turner only received 6 months for his rape of an unconscious woman.
This is disheartening and discouraging to rape victims who have to deal with the trauma and horrific emotional damage as a result of these attacks. This also gives potential predators the indication that they will not be held accountable for their actions.
