Here is the thing about privilege. People that have it are very protective of it, afraid of someone taking said privilege away. This is because the essence of privilege is that it is granted to you. Almost always independent of earning or deserving said privilege. The privilege Banks is talking about in this case is partly what we talk about when we say “White Privilege.” It is also a socioeconomic privilege, and the ability to not be seen as a racial other. The inherent advantage to owning white privilege and whiteness is that only white people have it. So not only does it create a disconnect between white and all racial others, it blinds the privileged class from seeing and experiencing the world as a racial other. Given this country’s history with racial others, it is very easy to understand why “White Privilege” is very real and very dangerous for those that do not have it.
