At the conclusion of the season NBA watchdogs widely speculated that Dwyane Wade would end his brief period of free agency and join long time friend and former teammate Lebron James as a Cleveland Cavalier. Instead, Wade opted to go back to his home town and join the Chicago Bulls.
Speaking to SLAM Magazine, Wade finally breaks his relative silence on what motivated him sign with the Bulls instead of joining James as a Cavalier and setting up an opportunity for a forth championship ring.
“I thought about Cleveland, but I didn’t fit there. You don’t just do something because, Oh, I could win the ring there. I have three rings. I don’t need to chase the ring. This is what I wanted to do. I couldn’t fight it. If you fight it, you’re gonna always be like, You shoulda, or what could’ve—I don’t like to live my life like that.”
Also worth considering the deal with Chicago (two-years, $47 million) is far more lucrative than anything Cleveland could afford to offer ($3.4 million). As Wade starts staring down retirement, another huge bonus.
Don’t weep for the Wade/Bron Bromance. It will continue during the offseason and holidays. They will continue to take their respective clans on fancy yacht vacations during the summer and exchange ugly sweaters in the winter.
