Tuesday night kicks off BET’s eagerly anticipated docu-series The New Edition Story. Highlighting the careers of 90’s R&B superstars Ricky Bell, Ronnie DeVoe, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, and Johnny Gill, the three-part series chronicles their early struggles before a meteoric rise to the top of music as a collective and the driving force behind off-shoot groups Bell Biv Devoe, Another Bad Creation and Boyz II Men as well as the solo careers of Bobby Brown and Ralph Tresvant.
On Monday night, the cast and crew graced the red carpet at Paramount Studios in Hollywood and shared with BSO stories of an intense three-week boot camp to prepare for their respective roles, what it was like sharing space with the living legends. Bryshere Gray, who portrays Michael Bivins in the film, says the preparation for the role ahead of filming was a serious grind.
“I play Michael Bivins from the age 15 until about 30. We spent time with the guys and three weeks in bootcamp in a room with no a/c.Mike would be like, ‘That’s not how I do this!’”
“He was like, ‘Our fans are gonna know if you’re not being me to the fullest!’”
With the entire cast on hand, the original members, and a talented crew all smiles on the carpet, it’s hard to tell who is more excited for the bio pic to get underway. One thing we do know is an entire new generation of music lovers will have the opportunity to see a true to life story of a super group that changed the R&B genre for the better in the 90’s.
“The New Edition Story” airs Jan. 24, 25 and 26 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on BET.
