Click 2 Houston is reporting that 70 or so students from Cypress Ranch High School gave Nazi salutes and shouted ‘Heil Hitler, Heil Trump‘ during a class photo. The senior students were assembled for the photo when many white students launched into the highly offensive and disgusting pose. Students that were not involved took photos and posted online.
The students were allegedly posing for the ‘silly picture’, taken after a more serious portrait of the class, when the incident occurred.
Nothing about the Nazi salute is silly or funny. The fact that these young people think so is deeply disturbing. But this isn’t anything new. This isn’t Trump’s America. This is America. This is who we as a country have always been. A nation built on a seedy, disgusting and insidious past. A past the country has never reconciled.
Cypress Ranch administrators did not provide any comments but sent a memo to parents, which read in part:
Several of our students made the poor choice of displaying inappropriate gestures during this time. Unfortunately, many of these images have been shared on social media. This is extremely disappointing as this is not an accurate representation of our student body. We are currently conducting an investigation and those implicated will be punished according to the Student Code of Conduct.
If eradicating this type of behavior is what we seek in our society, we need to stop normalizing this behavior by saying things like ‘poor choice.’ This act was worse than a poor choice, these are 17-18 year old young adults that know better and know right from wrong.
