There is so much deflection going on with Colin Kaepernick, I believe we are losing sight on what the actual issue is.
Colin Kaepernick is a starting caliber quarterback in the NFL. NFL owners and some racist prejudice fans did not like the method of his protest against police brutality and racial injustice.
NFL owners don’t like players to have too much power so they are blackballing him from the league. They are using him as an example to make sure other players who aren’t superstars don’t get any ideas beyond just shutting up and playing.
But because the talking heads need something to talk about they are grasping at anything to connect to Colin Kaepernick.
Case in point New FS1 hire Mark Schlereth compared the situation to Michael Sam, saying the NFL helped Sam get drafted to make the PR problem go away.
The problem with this comparison is that Sam wasn’t that good and that was proven in his short time in the NFL. If Kaepernick had kneeled for GAY RIGHTS he would have a job and probably some award from the NFL.
Jason Whitlock takes it even further because of course he does and compares the situation to Tawana Brawley who came to prominence for accusing four white men of raping her when she was 15. Many black activists supported her, but her claims were unfounded.
Whitlock somehow connects this to people supporting Colin Kaepernick. Beyond the fact we are talking about football and social activism and not something a serious as rape, these are really dangerous comparisons to just be floating out there.
You falsely accuse someone of rape you can ruining their lives forever and possibly take their freedom away, what Kaepernick is fighting for is a proven fact.
Racial injustice and police brutality isn’t fake, no one is caping for Kaepernick over something that is not happening, we see it happening every single day.
I understand the media, I work in it every day, but you can make your point without saying some of these things that really is damaging to our community.
It is sad.
