Ben McAdoo decided to take the leap on Tuesday and benched Eli Manning in favor of Geno Smith. To this point, Eli boasted 210 consecutive starts in the NFL, which is second only to Brett Favre. McAdoo tried to tell Eli that he would let him continue to start games so he could keep his streak alive, but Manning wasn’t about that cheating life.
Many people were stunned, to say the least, when the Manning benching was announced, and many showed their displeasure with the decision. After all, this was the Manning who beat Tom Brady twice in Super Bowl games to bring the trophy home to NYC, and now he was being benched? It made no sense, especially since Eli’s top 2 WRs went down with season ending injuries and many could agree that Manning really had no one to help ameliorate the lack of talent on the team.
Here we are nonetheless. Little brother Eli is benched, and Geno Smith will start in Sunday for the Giants. The great-granddaughter of the Giants’ owner, Kate Mara, wasn’t shy is expressing her feelings on the benching Tuesday night on her Twitter account. This doesn’t bode well for McAdoo.
