Breakdown of What an Odell Beckham Jr Extension May Look Like With the Giants; He Won’t Be Getting $20 Million a Year

As OBJ approaches the final year in his rookie contract, talks of an extension are in play. The flamboyant receiver is reportedly asking for $20 million a year – a number that salary cap experts say is very unlikely.

One agent told the Daily News:

“I can’t see any way the Giants get to $20 million,” one agent told the News. “That’s quarterback money. Even $18-19 million would be a stretch considering the cap costs. And I just can’t see the Giants bidding against themselves, especially Dave Gettleman, and giving him quarterback money.”

Coupled with Eli Manning’s hefty salary cap hit, the Giants simply can’t afford it. The Giants are set to pay OBJ $8.4 million this season and have the option of franchise tagging him the next two years. Over three seasons, he would earn $43.7 million compared to the $60 million total he’s reportedly asking for.

Zack Moore, author of “Caponomics: Building Super Bowl Champions”, proposes a 5-year extension at $17.2 million which would make him that highest paid wide receiver, eclipsing Antonio Brown who earns $17 million per year.

The Giants do hold the #2 pick in next week’s NFL Draft and could be looking for a Manning replacement which would free up a lot of money.

Stay tuned.
