On Monday, June 11, a Black mother, Carle Wheeler and her 5-year-old daughter headed down to the pool at a Pasadena Westin Hotel for an afternoon swim. The two ladies were confronted by an unidentified white man in a striped shirt and track pants, claiming to be a health inspector. The man asked Wheeler and her daughter if they had showered before they entered the pool. One can imagine the woman’s outrage and disdain.
The Pasadena Health Department responded saying they did not know this man, and health inspectors only discuss these matters with managers. Speaking of managers, the General Manager of the hotel, Carl Sprayberry joined the confrontation and let the white man go. He allegedly didn’t feel the need to investigate until other white patrons corroborated the woman’s story. The hotel says there is a pending investigation. Yawn.
Protesters gathered outside of the Westin Hotel yesterday demanding that Sprayberry resign as the hotel GM, saying he is unfit for the position if he lets these types of things occur on the hotel property with no form of reprimanding action.
Ms. Wheeler’s stay at the Westin Hotel was comped, but she still wants her story heard.
