The NFL is one of those leagues where guaranteed money isn’t much of a negotiation. Players feel they deserve guaranteed contracts and owners are of the mindset, that if you’re not available to play, why would you give you guaranteed money? It’s a tough spot and a lot of us may feel for the players and also understand the business of the game.
Todd Gurley ran into TMZ Sports and weighed in on players possibly striking for guaranteed money. He’s not the first athlete to express his notion on guaranteed money. Russell Okung of the Los Angeles Chargers took to Twitter expressing his opinion on players getting guaranteed money.
“Considering football’s level of brute, immanent physicality, high turnover as well as the short life cycle of its participants, it would seem to me that NFL players are in the most need of fully guaranteed contracts.”
In 1987 the players did strike for 24 days but it’s been a while since then. In 2021 the current NFL collective bargaining agreement ends and a strike may be imminent. Three more years of football left until players ask for guaranteed money. DeMaurice Smith, Executive Director of the NFLPA, says a work stoppage is certain. Everyone buckle up for a ride, we may be missing football sooner than later. Flip the page for video of Gurley discussing possibly striking.
