Here is what GGG’s trainer Abel Sanchez had to say about Canelo and the fight on September 15th.
We’re preparing for September 15. How he talked the first time, how he boasted, how Bernard boasted about being so great that he’s going to knock out Golovkin in the tenth round of the last fight and now what he’s saying about this fight.
I just hope that he’s true to his words. The fans are expecting the Canelo that they have seen in the past, not the Canelo they saw last year. I think that if he’s true to his word, that we’ll get the classic fight we were expecting the first time, two guys that want to win, not one guy that wants to win and the other guy that is looking to survive.
He’s got a duty in this fight, not only to himself but to his people, to prove what he was telling all of us was true, and if he does, I think that he’ll be celebrated. Win, lose or draw, he’ll be celebrated because of his approach to this fight.
Here is what Oscar said.
“The only way Canelo is going to vindicate himself is by knocking out Golovkin,” De La Hoya said. “He must think, breathe, sleep knockout.”
The consensus is that GGG won the first fight, but it was close in a lot of people’s eyes, the reason it was close was because there were parts of the fight where Canelo proved to be the younger, faster and superior boxer.
He did it in spurts, not all 12 rounds and that is why he was stuck with a draw.
The reasons why Abel Sanchez and to a lesser extent GGG have been questioning Canelo’s manhood is because they know that is how they win the fight. If Canelo just stands there and trades, GGG is going to get the better of that because that is how he is use to fighting.
I thought GGG said something very profound when they asked him if he thought Canelo truly ran from him in the first fight.
It was his fighting style earlier, not just in the September fight. Well, he was always — you know, he always has a way of running on the ring, but it was his style, GGG said.
If you have watched Canelo throughout his career, you know he isn’t your traditional Mexican fighter, he is more diverse with that. It can be a gift and curse for him, but he isn’t going to throw caution to the wind, he is going to take his time (often time take rounds off), and with lesser competition he eventually wears you down and puts a beating on you.
That isn’t running, that is boxing. It is tactical; he would be considered a boxer-puncher, which is why if he is smart, he will ignore everyone and do what worked for him against GGG.
One of the things Mayweather was good at was not being pressured into fighting a style he didn’t want to fight. It didn’t matter what the trainer, his opponent, fans or a promoter said. He was going to fight a Floyd Mayweather style fight and if you didn’t like it too bad. You could never goad him into doing anything in the ring he didn’t want to do.
Ironically, Canelo said the same things about Mayweather running from him and that he should fight like a man, but now Canelo must have the same menatlity as Mayweather. GGG has an idea on how to beat him, but he knows he needs Canelo cooperation, it is up to Canelo to decide if he wants a WAR or he wants a WIN.
