Before we get into the how the racial slurs could help Fields, here is why he plans to transfer.
Fields was the #1 QB recruit in the country but decided to go to Georgia where at the time freshman Jake Fromm had just led the Bulldogs to the National Championship game.
It appears Fields felt he would be able to unseat Fromm, but it didn’t happen this year and it looks like Fromm at least will be at UGA for one more year, possibly two, so Fields now wants out.
Highly touted quarterback Justin Fields has notified Georgia he intends to transfer, a person with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports.
Though Fields showed a few flashes of his talent, they came mostly in blowout games and it wasn’t clear that he had a path to more playing time next season with Fromm returning for his junior season in 2019.
Fields, from Kennesaw, Ga., just outside of Atlanta, arguably will be the most highly coveted transfer in all of college football. He is expected to appeal to the NCAA to be eligible this season.
Here is when the racist stuff might help him. In his appeal, he could say he is transferring because of a hostile environment as opposed to just wanting to play immediately.
While it is likely he is just leaving because Fromm is there, the NCAA might not want to deny someone saying they are leaving because of racism. It would be a bad PR look for them.
