Nick Collison will forever be a legend in Thunder franchise history. He played all 15 of his seasons with them which dates back to when they were still the Sonics in Seattle. He was drafted in 2003. Now, he will have his jersey retired on March 20.
Kevin Durant leaving Oklahoma City for the Warriors in the summer of 2016 still has a bitter taste in a lot of Thunder’s fans mouths but he is coming for the jersey retirement ceremony. Durant wants all differences to be put aside in order to honor Collison.
“That group was so special, that whole group from 2010 until I left there, it was special,” said Durant to ESPN. “It’s about time for us to let go of all that extra stuff, and just come together — especially around this time, because it’s Nick.”
This ceremony will put the idea that Durant could possibly come back to OKC in free agency. This is very unlikely, per ESPN. There’s supposedly no interest from either parties and the Thunder have moved on as they are building around Russell Westbrook and Paul George to be contenders. They currently stand at 30-18 and third in the West.
The Thunder are also happy to bring Durant along for the ceremony. Durant and Collison played together from 2007-2016 together. The 2007 season was spent in Seattle.
