Questions about Carolina Panthers franchise quarterback popped up after the team drafted West Virginia quarterback Will Grier last night.
It’s understandable on why reporters and fans would be concerned. After all, Panthers starting quarterback Cam Newton just had shoulder surgery, the team hasn’t made it back to the Super Bowl since 2016 and some of his moments with the media have been unsuitable.
Grier, from North Carolina, enters the league after having 37 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 2018. What a fairytale story to have a Carolina born quarterback come and take over the Carolina Panthers and rise into the sunset.
Assumptions came to an end as Panthers general manager Marty Hurney assures people the pick was just for depth purposes.
“Nothing to do with Cam,” Hurney said. “I said he’s our franchise quarterback. This is about depth and bringing in young guys and developing young guys. This has nothing to do with Cam Newton. Cam Newton is our starting quarterback and franchise quarterback. This is just about bringing in young guys to develop and depth.”
On their depth chart, Panthers current have one quarterback Taylor Heincke.
It’s a smart move for the team just in case Newton gets injured again. Plus the Panthers don’t have their old general manager Dave Gettleman who seems to say one thing and do another like in New York with Odell Beckham Jr.
So it’s safe to say the almost 30-year old quarterback is secured. Just cross your fingers he doesn’t get hurt again or has a terrible season. Things may change.
