The Anthony Davis trade to the Los Angeles Lakers continues to reverberate across the NBA.
The Lakers made the move to get Davis to bring in a much needed second superstar to join LeBron James in a quest to win another championship for the storied franchise.
The circumstances surrounding how Davis landed with the Lakers from the Pelicans continues to come in to focus in the wake of the massive haul that Pelicans executive David Griffin got for the superstar.
Conversely Lakers management has been under scrutiny, especially Rob Pelinka, in the wake of questionable decision making in roster building and more recently his hiring of Frank Vogel.
Apparently Pelinka doesn’t have a strong grasp of the salary cap either.
ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, appearing on The Jump, detailed how Pelinka wasn’t fully aware of the salary cap ramifications in trading for Anthony Davis,
Shelburne saying in part,
“They went all the way down the road and it’s been described to me as a, ‘The Lakers called back,’ after everything had been discussed about this — the timing…”,
and it being,
“all so unnecessary.”
The timing she is referring to is when the trade would presumably go down.
By trading for Davis on July 6th instead of July 30th, the Lakers could cost themselves the ability to have a 3rd max slot during free agency.
That could be damaging if they are looking to bring in a 3rd star to formulate a Big 3, to help James and Davis attempt to win a championship.
Pelinka seems to still be learning on the job, while Griffin is a seasoned professional.
It appears that Griffin may have gotten over on Pelinka even with both teams essentially getting what they wanted.
