After several players sign within minutes of free agency starting the league has now launched an investigation whether teams were tampering.
According to Zach Lowe and Brian Windhorst “The scope of the investigation is still being determined, but sources say it will likely focus on some of the earliest reported deals on June 30 — the first day teams and representatives for free agents are technically allowed to speak. League officials are expected to begin scheduling interviews in the coming days as they seek to gather information, sources said. There is no timetable for its completion.”
During the board of governors meeting, earlier this month owners were raising concerns about a flurry of deals being done within hours of free agency opening up.
It’s obvious tampering rules were violated during this year free agency. Al Horford signed a 4-year $109 million with the 76ers as soon as free agency opens up. Horford knew what his market was which was one of the reason why he decline the $30 million option and Kemba Walker reached a deal within minutes with the Boston Celtics.
The league has turned a blind eye into the tampering that was going on this season. It got worse this year and what the league is going to find in the investigation is that all 30 teams violated the rules.
Once this investigation concludes teams aren’t going to get punished but some rules will be changed into the free agency system in the future.
