In an interview with journalist Bryant Gumbel, New York native Valentino Dickson captivated his supporters with his passion for art. When we look at great artists, how many black men have a desire to paint golf courses in vivid detail?
On “Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel: Fairway to Freedom” Dickson’s art was featured at the Burchfield Pennery Art Center in Buffalo. Dickson is a black man who grew up in a neighborhood where opportunity ran dry although hidden talent would soon be revealed. He told Gumble how golf was never the sport he pursued.
“Golfing really?” Football, basketball…no golf…not even the mention of the word golf. Show me in the inner city where there is a golf course?”
Dickson served 27 years in prison due to an unlawful conviction on a murder he didn’t commit. His story is one of those faith-based testimonies and after seen guilty in the eyes of a racist system, I’m sure he’s happy to be alive swimming in his freedom of joy, peace, and happiness.
The show is available on HBO and streaming on HBO Max
