Following a rough 2020 season with injuries to Jimmy G coupled with overall poor play from the signal-caller, all culminated in an ugly six-win season, there have been plenty of rumors that the Niners want to upgrade from Garoppolo.
A couple of the names that have been flirting out there as a possibility have been Sam Darnold and Carson Wentz, but as of this past season, it is hard to tell who is really the best quarterback of Darnold, Wentz, and Garoppolo. However, there IS another quarterback reportedly unhappy in his situation, which is undeniably better than Garoppolo, that is Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN has basically confirmed, San Fran would only be willing to move Jimmy G for Deshaun Watson.
“I’m told San Fran is looking at potential upgrades, but they still like Jimmy G. He’s 24-9 as a starter, including the playoffs, with the Niners. They believe they can win with him, but it would take a big swing, like a Deshaun Watson effect here, to make that change.”
Watson would certainly benefit from playing under the offensive mind of Shahanah with weapons like Kittle, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk etc. But before that can happen the Texans would first have to admit Watson is available, to this point, they have refused to even acknowledge Watson is on the trading block, despite his demands to be moved.
In the event that Jimmy G is not traded, it would probably behoove the Niners to find a more suitable backup. Jimmy G has missed 23 games over the past three seasons. Absolutely stifling any real chances the Niners had to be competitive.
