I had the opportunity to speak to the director and producer of the series OZARK, Chris Mundy.
He really gave some insight on what we can expect going forward from Marty and the gang. The first question I asked him was something I was always curious about, which is what a Showrunner does on a show like this, and here is what he had to say.
Ultimately responsible for, even though there’s a bunch of other writers in the room and they write scripts, so I’m writing the scripts or I’m kind of editing their scripts and leading it when we all come up with a story together. And then, then other part of the job, one part of the job is then you’re in charge of along with a person who’s like your line producer and I’m running the crew.
You’re responsible to the studio, into the network when they come and say to you like, Hey, everything’s great, except you’re a million dollars over budget fix that. You’ve got to figure out how to do that. Um, you know, not panic and do that. And then the, the next part of the job is you, um, you know, you are sort of, kind of the lead person for people to come to from like the crew and the cast.
And so if actors have a question. I want to know where their story’s going around, happy, where their stories going, or just that, you know, you’re the person that’s talking with them about all that. And then finally, when you’ve got it all filmed and you sit in the, in the editing room, you know, you’re the person at the editing room at the end of it and kind of says like, okay, that’s what we want to do.
I think many people want to know if there will be a definite ending for OZARK or if it will be left open-ended like the Sopranos.
Mundy gave me a direct answer to that without spoiling anything.
You know, people might not like it, but at least it’ll at least be an ending. And so, uh, um, cause I feel like we’ve started this long fable and, and to, uh, and to not give some kind of conclusion about in the. For the birds and for the line Moore’s for, you know, for everybody else in the Ozarks and in our world, it really feels like we ought to, we ought to know when we leave this shit.
And we don’t get to see these people again, we ought to know where they are out in the world. And that’s awesome.
I also had to ask about Ruth.
My favorite character on the show, and I wasn’t surprised to find out that Julie Garner is as wonderful off-screen as she is onscreen.
I think she’s amazing. And she’s like the best person too, so that’s awesome.
OZARK Season 4 debuts on January 21, 2022.
