Freedom of speech does not mean freedom of consequence, and former NBA player Chandler Parsons is learning this fact quickly. Parsons, in today’s time, is widely known for his hot takes on current NBA players as well as the game as a whole. This time is no exception, as he gave his opinion on the recent Lakers-Celtics game in which LeBron James became outraged over a missed shooting foul call committed by Jayson Tatum.
“I can watch my French Bulldog get ran over by the Mailman right now, and I would not react like that,” Parsons said on Fan Duel TV.
Figurative speech or not, this type of commentary about a moment as controversial as that is bound to receive quite a bit of feedback from the NBA world. Even if LeBron’s reaction to the missed call was a bit over the top, it also was warranted given what was at stake at that moment. A few things to remember with this situation. Firstly, the Lakers went on to lose to the Celtics in overtime, which likely wouldn’t have happened in the first place had he gotten the call and be sent to the free throw line. Secondly, the Lakers feel like they’ve been on the wrong side of controversial calls multiple times this season.
Last but not least, they are fighting for their playoff lives. If you’re going to have an opinion on his reactions, that’s all fine and good. However, I believe Parsons should have phrased his message much better than that.
But now it’s too late to backtrack. The message is out there, and the internet is forever. If the goal for Parsons was to gain attention for himself, then safe to say mission accomplished. NBA Twitter especially had a field day with posting memes about Parsons’s comments about LeBron.
