As a Saints fan, the 2017 Draft Class will forever be known as one of the best ever. However, there will always be that “what if” question that pops up in my head when I see Patrick Mahomes do the things he does with the Kansas City Chiefs. It’s been well-documented that former Saints head coach Sean Payton would pick Mahomes, but the Chiefs jumped one spot ahead of them to select him. With the retirement of Drew Brees and the quarterback room being a revolving door, it hurts to know that Mahomes isn’t wearing black & cold.
That said, if you’re a Chicago Bears fan, seeing Mahomes have the success he’s having must sting even worse. Because the Bears had the chance to draft Mahomes but instead went with Mitchell Trubisky—who couldn’t keep the starting job over rookie Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett. Mahomes spoke with the media ahead of his Super Bowl matchup against Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles. Specifically, he talked about the draft night and how the Bears passed him up. Mahomes’ father claimed that Chicago notified them that his son would be taken third overall.
“My dad took it a little far,” said Mahomes.“It wasn’t that I thought the Bears were going to draft me — but I was told that if they drafted a quarterback, that I would be the quarterback that they drafted.
“[My dad] acted like they were going to draft me for sure in that interview — and I don’t know if it was that serious.”
Today, the Chiefs and Bears couldn’t be further apart from one another if they tried. The Chiefs are again back in the Super Bowl, with Mahomes attempting to gain his 2nd ring before he even turns 30. At the same time, the Bears are picking 1st overall in this year’s NFL Draft. It didn’t work out for the Bears, but the same can’t be said for Mahomes.
“I wanted to get drafted here — to the Kansas City Chiefs — and I think it’s well- documented that I wanted to get drafted here.”
